Active Minds is our project with FURD (Football Unites Racism Divides). FURD use football to bring people from different backgrounds together, to play the game and break down barriers created by ignorance or prejudice.

Every Wednesday we offer people from a range of backgrounds (open to anyone aged 18+) the opportunity to have a game of football but also receive support for their mental health.

When:

Every Wednesday

These sessions are generally attended by 30 to 40 individuals from a variety of backgrounds, primarily refugees and asylum seekers. Ability levels vary from complete beginners to advanced.

Time:

Football session: 1pm - 3pm

Support from Sheffield Mind: 12:30pm – 2:30pm

Where:

Football Unites Racism Divides

17 Asline Rd, Lowfield, Sheffield S2 4UJ

Please note

  • Players must arrive promptly due to high numbers.
  • We can also provide short 1-1 sessions for anyone who might like to talk for a bit longer in a private space.
  • At both football sessions we have a limited number of football boots that players can borrow, along with bits of kit and shin pads as well.
  • From 1pm to 1.30pm we provide sandwiches, fruit and refreshments with chance to speak about any problems you may be experiencing.
  • Our football sessions are primarily about having fun! So, we ask that all players control their language and refrain from swearing and arguments. Our coaches will be on hand to remind people to support one another. Persistent use of bad language/behaviour will result in players being asked to sit out or leave until they calm down. However, this rarely happens. We have zero tolerance for aggressive behaviour.
  • If someone is interested in football but doesn't want to play, there is an opportunity to referee. This is another area where support and training is available.
