Why did you start volunteering for Sheffield Mind?

I had to give up working and had a lot of spare time on my hands that I didn't want to go to waste. Having suffered mental health issues and come out the other side, it was my chance to put something back.

What is your role?

I have many!!

I facilitate the 'Mankind' men's group which meets every week either on line or in person and also facilitate the weekly 'Friendly Friday' coffee morning. Both these groups provide a safe space for people to come and to connect, to make friends and to get advice and support.

I am a Trustee, with a remit for encouraging service user engagement and ensuring that the users of Sheffield Mind services are able to tell us what they think and share their ideas for if and how we can do things better.

I attend a lot of events and often talk to members of the public about what it is we do - I do like a chat!

What do you enjoy about volunteering for Sheffield Mind?

I feel a positive sense of self.

What have you learned?

I've learned that giving is living and makes you feel good about yourself and society.

Would you recommend volunteering for Sheffield Mind to other people?

I would definitely recommend volunteering  for Sheffield Mind but also volunteering in general, everyone should do it! Its a great way to develop skills and experience, no two days at Sheffield Mind are the same and there are always new people coming through the doors.

We rely on volunteers to deliver our services and help us with events and we do appreciate the support we get from the local community.
