My name is Bingyan.

I am studying psychology at the University of Sheffield. I am currently volunteering with Sheffield Mind to enhance my academic knowledge and acquire deeper comprehension. I chose Sheffield Mind because I am particularly drawn to Sheffield Mind’s holistic approaches to mental health, which recognize the importance of both mental and physical health and the commitment to treating individuals with dignity and understanding.

Moreover, Sheffield Mind runs many projects that provide opportunities for people to observe how professionals work with people struggling with mental well-being in distinct aspects. Also, the warm and welcoming atmosphere and friendly and approachable staff also make Sheffield Mind the desirable choice to volunteer.

What I hope to get out of this volunteer job is to become more confident and be more capable of managing any unexpected circumstances. In the meantime, reinforcing my communication skills, empathy, listening skills, and resilience. By observing the professionals, it helps me explore more strategies that I could use to self-help when I am in a low mood and be capable of helping the people I love and care about. At the same time, it also allows me to gain hands-on experience in the field and discover my passion to shape my future career.

One of the events I have been volunteering for is the Tramlines Festival. I really enjoyed it and appreciated the opportunity to provide people with a place to get away from the noise and to find a piece of quiet by staying in the sensory tent. During the festival, I had the chance to chat with different people and observe different kinds of relationships between parents and kids. Also, during cooperation with Sheffield Mind staff, I gained hands-on experience assisting people who feel overwhelmed by crowds and noise. Furthermore, I’ve learned how to manage crisis situations or help people de-escalate from heightened emotions.
